Yeah, he was kinda okay...

Holy shit. As someone getting back into drums after a 14 year hiatus, I wish had 1% of the talent he has in his pinky. I mean damn!!!

And to still have it at that age. I’ll be lucky if I can still stand to pee when I’m that old. I played mine last week for the first time in probably 5 years. I was surprised at how sharp I still am, but man, my stamina is gone. After about 5 minutes my arms got tired enough that I was getting sloppy.

I hear you on that. At 31 years old I feel like I’m already headed down hill.

A couple years ago I missed music so I bought a bass and started learning, and discovered I’m a really, really bad bass player. Last year I jammed with some friends who are awesome guitarists and I was really dragging everyone down. So I said screw it, I’m a better drummer anyways, so I bought an electronic kit on Black Friday. We played over the holidays and while I’m still rusty, I was amazed at how much I could still do. We jammed for almost 6 hours and I was dead at the end, and had so many weird aches and pains the next day.

If I recall correctly (it’s been roughly 12-13 years since I taught the History and Development of Jazz course at NMSU), what REALLY made Buddy Rich distinct (aside from his infamous personality flaw as a bandleader)...

...was that he was completely self-taught. He was pretty much a virtuoso before anyone gave him any formal instruction, which, at that point, he didn’t really need.

I might be wrong on that. Someone who cares more passionately this morning than I do can go to Wikipedia. I have grades to do. -_-

Even Animal admits that Buddy Rich is awesome.

This man is one of my drumming heroes. Just amazing. This makes me depressed that my kit is packed away at the moment. No more room in the house with kids around.

Mine are set up, but mostly just collecting dust. I did play them last week for the first time in a number of years and man, it felt so good.

I learned to play on my dad’s ‘72 Slingerland Buddy Rich set so I’ve always had a soft spot for the guy.

Oh man, Slingerland! I had a beautiful wooden Slingerland snare when I was young, it was stolen.

I’m seriously thinking about an electronic kit for the garage just to keep my chops up. I grew up watching my dad play gigs (on bass) and loved it, I’d like my kids to enjoy the same.
